A less explored place in eastern India is the capital city of Bhubaneswar. People mainly throng Odisha to visit Jagannath Temple in Puri. But apart from the temple, there are many things to explore in the state of Odisha.
Bhubaneswar now is directly connected from flights by Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Vizag. A weekend trip can be made for a quick getaway to this best kept secret of India (Odisha).
So, this is my suggestion for a weekend getaway to Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Day 1 - Bhubaneswar & Around
After landing in the city, a visit can be made to Dhauli Temple (Buddha Stupa) which is 20-25 kms from the city. This place also has a light and sound show in the evening. The other place that can be covered after that is the ancient Lingaraj Temple which is located in the city itself. The wildlife lovers can opt for Nandan Kanan Zoological Park (Day hours) which is one of the largest national parks. The city also has a state museum which is a good visit (Optional).
Day 2 - Konark and Puri
On the second day morning, one can visit the Sun Temple in Konark and make sure to take a guide to show the place around. The guides of various languages are present and available at the temple premises. Konark town is around 75 kms from Bhubaneswar. It also has a Chandrabhaga beach close to the temple which is a tourist attraction. From Bhubaneswar, Konark is around 72 kms by road. After visiting Konark, one can head to Puri (38 kms from Konark) in the evening to visit the Jagannath Temple (One of the "Char Dhaam") and also enjoy the Puri Beach. The Puri beach is an attraction for the Surfers from around the world during the season. After visiting these two places, you return to your base in Bhubaneswar.
Day 3 - Chilika Lake
The morning of Day 3, one can visit the Chilika Lake which is 62 kms from Bhubaneswar. It is a large brackish water lagoon and many rare birds can be spotted here in addition to Irrawady Dolphins. There is boating pad at the lake where one can hire a boat(with guide) for 1 to 4 hours depending on the time they have to see the places around. This place is also known for the lovely seafood it has to offer in local cuisine.
